“WE CAN’Tsleep in here, Sean. If someone from the fire marshal’s

office makes a spot inspection while it’s still full of stuff, you can kiss this place good-bye.” Sean turned as he was halfway down the empty hallway. “I just want to grab some things.” He headed to the kitchen while Peter used the bathroom. He looked for Sean when he got done, and found him still standing in the now almost-empty room. Instead of stacks of books and mounds of plastic, the floor was bare, and the tabletop was clear.

“It looks so weird in here now.” Peter nodded. It did. He put his arm around Sean, pressing his lips to his temple. “You know this is what normal kitchens look like, don’t you?” His teasing was gentle.

“I’m not sure I like it.” Sean rubbed his palm over the table, which was pitted and stained by who knew what. “I mean, I love that all the crap is gone. That’s such a relief. It just doesn’t feel like home, that’s all.”

“Maybe that’s for the best.” While Maggie wasn’t in such a desperate hurry for money now, realistically she wasn’t going to be able to wait forever. Sooner or later this wouldn’t be Sean’s home anymore, so maybe a slow acceptance that things were changing was better. He watched Sean frown, fingertips following the now-revealed rings in the wood.

“What were you looking for in here, anyway?”

“Oh, flashlights.” Sean found them, and they both headed to the cabin door. They stood in the open doorway together, watching as the light went out in the RV across the yard. Sean said, “I’m assuming that you’re good camping with me rather than sharing with them?”

“Fuck yes.”

Sean’s whispered “Good” made Peter need to touch him. He pushed Sean ahead of him instead, smiling, saying, “Hurry.”

Sean did. He led the way into the woods quickly and carefully, passing a flashlight to Peter and following a path rather than taking shortcuts. “It’s not too far.” They walked for another ten minutes or so, chatting the whole way. Somehow Sean brought the conversation around to their test status. “I’m clean. I just thought you should know. I’ve only ever had safe sex, and I was last tested a few months ago.”

Peter stopped. “We don’t have to do anything more than we have done already, Sean. I’m still expecting to wake up any minute. But yeah, me too.” He hadn’t been with anyone for long enough to make dropping condom use a serious consideration.

The forest was so different in the dark. Moths flew into their flashlight beams when they continued along the path, making Peter flinch and Sean chuckle. “Let’s hope we don’t meet any real wildlife.” He paused and then stopped walking. “Do you know the best way to keep larger animals away from a campsite?”

Peter tried to recall his few memories of the Boy Scouts. “Light a big fire?”

Sean held his free hand, pulling him close. “That, or make a lot of noise.”

Peter kissed him, feeling Sean’s smile against his lips after he murmured, “I can help you with that.
